What has SHIYO been up to this year?

The 2009-2010 season was a very active season for SHIYO!  In the fall semester, members of the group performed three times in total.  In October, selected members of the orchestra performed for the China Entrepreneur of the Year Award ceremony which was a nationally televised event.  Then, the whole orchestra was featured at the Shanghai Community Center's 10th Anniversary Gala in November at Jin Mao Tower.  Finally, the fall semester was finished off with a final performance at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center in December, featuring Chinese violinist Mei Mei Wei and English violinist Patrick Sabberton.  The following month, SHIYO was invited to perform with the Calvin College (USA) orchestra for a joint performance at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.  We were very pleased to perform at Luwan District's Dapu Bridge Community Center for our 3rd Season's finale concert on May 8th!

Begun in the Fall of 2007, the Shanghai International Youth Orchestra is the first community youth orchestra in Shanghai, taught entirely in English (Mandarin friendly), to actively integrate local Chinese students with international students.  The orchestra encompasses advanced string students, ages 12-19.  The group meets every Sunday afternoon in downtown Puxi during the academic year.  A minimum of two public concerts are given in the Fall and Spring, and are held in a professional music venue in Shanghai.  Also, community outreach programs are part of the planned performances season.  Future plans involve performances in other Chinese cities and collaborations with other music organizations.

Benefits:

International and local teachers; professional performance venues; meet new friends from different schools; exchange language; have fun learning great music!
